UKTC will open officially open the doors to its new fire resistance laboratory on the 9th of July 2026 follow UKAS accreditation for its new furnace. LABORATORY OPENING DAY A MILESTONE FOR FIRE SAFETY IN THE UK On the 9th of July 2026, UKTC will officially open the doors of its new fire resistance test laboratory and will mark the occasion with a live demonstration of the new furnace. Alongside the live fire resistance test, the event will be a celebration featuring live presentations, street food and opportunities for networking with professionals from across the fire safety industry. The event will be by invitation only and due to the limited numbers we are welcoming those interested in attending to register their interest using the form at the bottom of this page. On completion of the test, the responsible officer will confirm the results within 24 hrs. This will be followed by a comprehensive draft report within 14 days. Can my product be changed from what was tested? Unlike fire resistance tests under British Standards, European standards provide a Direct Field of Application (DIAP) which detail the permissible changes from what was tested. An Extended Field of Application (EXAP) can also be undertaken which offers a great scope of variations than a DIAP. What is third-party certification? Third-party certification is independent verification that a product or service fulfils certain criteria. With passive fire protection products, this normally involves a certification body assessing test results, carrying out a factory production control audit and undertaking periodic inspections to ensure constancy of performance. UKTC work with many approved certification providers, including Bluesky Certification, IFC Certification and UL Solutions. What is UKCA Marking? UK Conformity Assessed (UKCA) marking is the new product marking which will be required for certain products placed on the market in Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland). FIRE DOOR CLASSIFICATIONS Understanding a fire door classification is crucial for specifying the door on construction projects and for existing buildings. How to read Fire Door Classifications The only way to specify and verify the performance of a fire door is to first understand a fire door classification. A classification can tell you the expected performance of a door at a glance and is crucial for all stakeholders involved. In the UK there are currently two routes to market for fire door manufacturers; the British (BS) or European (EN). The fire door classifications are different so it is crucial to understand both as a classification will allow you to identify both the performance and how the door was tested. Reading a Reaction to Fire Classification For example, a classification of "B-s1,d0" indicates that the material has very limited contribution to fire (B), minimal smoke production (s1), and no flaming droplets or particles (d0). Construction products should be clearly labelled to allow you to identify its reaction to fire. - Single Burning Flame Test | BS EN 13823:2020 | UKTC
Dive into the BS EN 13823:2020 test process, where we assess building products' reaction to thermal attack by a single burning item. SINGLE BURNING ITEM (SBI) TESTING BS EN ISO 13823:2020 WHAT IS A SINGLE BURNING ITEM (SBI) TEST? This procedure specifies a method of test for determining the rection to fire performance of construction products when exposed to thermal attack by a single burning item (SBI). The test specimen consists of 2 vertical wings forming a right-angled corner. The dimensions of the wings are: The long wing: 1500mm high x 1000mm long. The short wing 1500mm high x 500 + (thickness of long wing) mm long The maximum thickness shall be no more than 200mm. If the product is thicker than 200mm, then thickness shall be reduced on the unexposed side. The samples must be conditioned, a minimum of 3 samples must be tested. The extraction is set to a volume flow of 0.6=-0.05m³/s. Each test specimen is then fixed in the trolley and is exposed to a flame from a burner placed at the bottom of the corner. The flame is obtained by combustion of propane gas and gives heat output of 30.7±2kW. The flame is applied for 20 mins. The test apparatus measures the following: Temperatures of exhaust gases Volume flow in the exhaust Light attenuation (for measurement of smoke density) O2 and CO2 mole fraction of the exhaust gases. These quantities are recorded automatically and are used to calculate the Heat Release Rate (HRR) and Smoke Production Rate (SPR). A visual observation is also measured for flaming droplets an horizontal spread of flame. HRR is used to calculate FIGRA (fire growth rate) at 0.2 and 0.4MJ, and SPR is used to calculate SMOGRA (smoke growth rate). The test report is then written by the highly experienced UKTC team. How much does a fire resistance test cost? Full-scale Fire Resistance tests are priced from £9,000 plus VAT. However, every test is unique, and fees can vary based on the scope of work involved. During contract review, UKTC personnel will work collaboratively with customers to ensure that the broadest field of application is achieved whilst minimising investment. What is BS EN 13501-1? BS EN 13501-1 is a European standard that classifies the fire performance of a constriction product. The standard provides a framework, and series of tests used to determine how materials react to fire including its smoke production and flaming droplets. It assigns Euroclass ratings (A1, A2, B, C, D, E, F) to products based on their performance. What is Reaction to Fire Testing? Reaction to Fire testing examines the characteristics, such as combustibility, smoke production and flaming droplets, of building materials to determine the product's contribution to fire development and spread. How much does a reaction to fire test cost? The tests involved in a Reaction to Fire test program are dependent on the classification the product requires. This will then impact the test. A typical, full scale Reaction to Fire test program of one product can be between £2,000 and £5,000. What is an Extended Field of Application Report (EXAP)? Extended Field of Application (EXAP) reports present a prediction of performance based on one or more test results, thereby enabling a broader field of application while maintaining or enhancing performance to product in question. How long does it take to complete a scoping analysis? Every Scope Analysis is unique to the manufacturer. On average, a scoping analysis including the production of a full report will take no longer than two weeks.
