  • Single Burning Flame Test | BS EN 13823:2020 | UKTC

Dive into the BS EN 13823:2020 test process, where we assess building products' reaction to thermal attack by a single burning item. SINGLE BURNING ITEM (SBI) TESTING BS EN ISO 13823:2020 WHAT IS A SINGLE BURNING ITEM (SBI) TEST? This procedure specifies a method of test for determining the rection to fire performance of construction products when exposed to thermal attack by a single burning item (SBI). The test specimen consists of 2 vertical wings forming a right-angled corner. The dimensions of the wings are: The long wing: 1500mm high x 1000mm long. The short wing 1500mm high x 500 + (thickness of long wing) mm long The maximum thickness shall be no more than 200mm. If the product is thicker than 200mm, then thickness shall be reduced on the unexposed side. The samples must be conditioned, a minimum of 3 samples must be tested. The extraction is set to a volume flow of 0.6=-0.05m³/s. Each test specimen is then fixed in the trolley and is exposed to a flame from a burner placed at the bottom of the corner. The flame is obtained by combustion of propane gas and gives heat output of 30.7±2kW. The flame is applied for 20 mins. The test apparatus measures the following: Temperatures of exhaust gases Volume flow in the exhaust Light attenuation (for measurement of smoke density) O2 and CO2 mole fraction of the exhaust gases. These quantities are recorded automatically and are used to calculate the Heat Release Rate (HRR) and Smoke Production Rate (SPR). A visual observation is also measured for flaming droplets an horizontal spread of flame. HRR is used to calculate FIGRA (fire growth rate) at 0.2 and 0.4MJ, and SPR is used to calculate SMOGRA (smoke growth rate). The test report is then written by the highly experienced UKTC team. WHAT PRODUCT CLASSIFICATIONS REQUIRE BS EN 13823:2020 TESTING? The Single Burning Item (BS EN 13823:2020) test would be required in order to achieve a product classification of A2, B, C and D: A1 A2 B C D E F How to Read Product Classifications

  • Scope Analysis for Fire Testing & EXAPs | UKTC

A scope analysis helps manufacturers minimise the amount of fire testing required to cover their scope. This is crucial for companies relying on BS 476 evidence. SCOPING ANALYSIS A Scoping Analysis is an expert review of your product range and wish list for coverage through fire testing. This exercise will minimise the number of fire resistance tests required to achieve the maximum scope coverage by using Direct Field of Application (DIAP) and Extended Field of Application (EXAP) rules. THE PATHWAY TO AN EXTENDED FIELD OF APPLICATION USING A SCOPING ANALYSIS The purpose of the Scoping Analysis exercise is to maximise the coverage of your fire test evidence and minimise the number of tests required. How long does a Scoping Analysis take? Every scope is unique to a manufacturer and the timeline will be agreed in advance. On average, this exercise is complete within two weeks. Why does the Scoping Analysis route lead to an Extended Field of Application? To minimise the amount of testing and investment required to achieve a full scope, for many manufacturers the solution will be an Extended Field of Application. This offers a greater scope of options than the very limited Direct Field of Application (DIAP) and will be crucial for manufacturers transitioning their test evidence from BS 476 to BS EN ahead of September 2029. Who can issue an Extended Field of Application Report? UKAS Accredited Laboratories can issue Extended Field of Application Reports. This be achieved by an industry-expert that knowledge of both fire resistance testing and the rules of the BS EN 15269 Extended Field of Application standards. What does a Scoping Analysis cost? A Scoping Analysis can start at £4,500 and vary depend on the complexity of the scope. 01 DISCOVERY SESSION Our technical experts will work with your team to define a "wish list" of configurations and components to be covered by your evidence. Existing evidence will be reviewed and used to identify gaps in your product coverage. 02 DEFINED SCOPE & TIMELINE Following completion of the Scoping Analysis, our team will create a tailored, recommended fire test program that will maximise your scope coverage in the least amount of tests. 03 FIRE TESTING It is then the responsibility of the manufacturer to produce and complete the proposed fire resistance test program. Upon completion of the program the test reports can be submitted to our Technical Services team to create an EXAP. 04 EXTENDED FIELD OF APPLICATION REPORT An Extended Field of Application, and subsequent Classification Reports, can be developed and issued following receipt of all test evidence. The timeline for an EXAP is subject to the number of test reports and range of scope. READY TO GET STARTED? • Testing & Certification FAQs | UKTC

We've created a list of the most common questions related to fire testing & certification to help you navigate it. If you can't find what you're looking for, as our team. Fire Testing & Certification Frequently Asked Questions It's easy to be overwhelmed with the amount of information related to the fire testing & certification of products. We've pulled together some of the most common question below to help you. If your question isn't answered below, contact one of our team and we will get back to you. Frequently asked questions General Fire Resistance Testing Reaction to Fire Testing Technical Services How long does it take to get results? On completion of the test, the responsible officer will confirm the results within 24 hrs. This will be followed by a comprehensive draft report within 14 days. Can my product be changed from what was tested? Unlike fire resistance tests under British Standards, European standards provide a Direct Field of Application (DIAP) which detail the permissible changes from what was tested. An Extended Field of Application (EXAP) can also be undertaken which offers a great scope of variations than a DIAP. What is third-party certification? Third-party certification is independent verification that a product or service fulfils certain criteria. With passive fire protection products, this normally involves a certification body assessing test results, carrying out a factory production control audit and undertaking periodic inspections to ensure constancy of performance. UKTC work with many approved certification providers, including Bluesky Certification, IFC Certification and UL Solutions. What is UKCA Marking? UK Conformity Assessed (UKCA) marking is the new product marking which will be required for certain products placed on the market in Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland). Does my product require UKCA Marking? The Construction Products Regulation in Great Britain states that any Construction Product covered by a UK Designated Standard must be UKCA marked.
